Internet (POP3 or IMAP4, SMTP):
- Applix Office by VistaSource, for Unix/Linux/BSD, is a fully-integrated, cross-platform suite of desktop productivity tools. Included in the suite are graphical tools for word processing and document publishing, spreadsheets, business graphics, graphics editing, data access and e-mail. Applix Mail is the e-mail component. They also make a Java version for use via any Java-enabled web browser.
- ELMO includes POP, SMTP, Open SSL, partial GPG support, and Bayesian mail filtering.
- Evolution for Unix/Linux. email, calendering, PIM, etc. POP/IMAP/SMTP. With the Connector module, you can hook into Exchange mail and calendaring features.
- GNUS mail and newsreader for EMACS.
- HancomOffice PIM component, named Quicksilver, does POP/IMAP.
- Metamail is a set of packages for handling MIME e-mail

- Mozilla is a web broswer, mail and news client, and HTML editor.
- Netscape, based on the Mozilla work, is also a web browser, mail and news client, and HTML editor.

- Mulberry for Linux and Solaris by Cyrusoft does multiple accounts, POP3/IMAP4/SMTP, PGP, SSL.

- NEXOR Despatch is a UNIX email client interface which enables access to a
Microsoft Exchange Infrastructure. It is available for a 30 day free trial
from the NEXOR website.
- Outlook Express has been discontinued for Unix.
- Postilion "is a mail user agent based upon the popular TkRat program. The main changes to TkRat are in the user interface portion, so all of the underlying functionality of TkRat remains. This includes MIME support, Virtual folders, PGP support, support for unix mail files, MH folders, POP and IMAP."
- StarOffice by Sun does mail and news, as well as word processing, spreadsheet,
graphic and presentation programs, event scheduler, an equation generator, and an HTML editor. Comes in Windows, OS/2, Unix, and Linux versions. Free for individual non-commercial use.
- TradeClient by Bynari Software for Unix/Linux is an e-mail program and PIM, supporting POP/IMAP/SMTP.
KDE:
- Aethera by theKompany. "is a pim application, i.e. it handles all kinds of personal information: email, contacts, notes, tasks, todos, journals. It has various communication features regarding: send/receive email, send/receive task requests and appointment requests via email and it can also send SMSs using web gateways."

- KMail "is a fully-featured email client that fits nicely into the K Desktop Environment, KDE. It has features such as support for filters, PGP/GnuPG privacy, inline attachments, drag and drop support of messages and attachments and support for multiple POP3 accounts."

GNOME: (Connecting with GNOME Mail Clients)
- AMC Mail Client for GNOME by Axion "differs from other mail clients in that it attempts to utilize existing tools for mail retrieval, sending, and filtering, (fetchmail, sendmail/smtp, procmail). By not going through the process of reinventing the wheel, the AMC Mail Client starts out as a fully functional client that inherits all of the features of these existing tools, only having to focus further development mainly on message creation/reading capabilities, and the gui."
- Balsa for Linux (GNOME). It supports mbox, maildir, and mh local mailboxes, and IMAP4 and POP3 remote mailboxes. You can send mail via sendmail or SMTP
- Eucalyptus by Paul Schifferer for GNOME. Supports multiple POP accounts.
- Evolution by Helix Code for GNOME desktop. They describe it as "The leading Open Source groupware solution." It will be adding support for POP/IMAP.

- MMC for GNOME by Sourceforge.net has POP3/SMTP, IMAP and multiple accounts are planned.

X:
- Althea (sourceforge) IMAP client. "The designers of Althea felt that there wasn't a stable, easy to use, GUI, IMAP (Internet Message Access Protocol) e-mail client for X Windows. The design goal was a stable e-mail client with the richness of usability of Microsoft's Outlook, Qualcomm's Eudora, and Cyrusoft's Mulberry."
- Arrow for X by New Planet Software. Uses standard mailbox format and Pine's address book format, POP/APOP, GPGP, PGP, spellchecker.
- Mahogany by Karsten Ballüder and the M-Team is an OpenSource cross-platform mail and news client. It is available for X11/Unix and MS Windows platforms, supporting a wide range of protocols and standards, including POP3, IMAP and full MIME support.
- Mailliam is a free, open source, user-friendly mail client for the X Window System. It is inspired by several other mail clients, such as Qualcomm's Eudora.
- ML: A mail program for X and IMAP by Mike Macgirvin. Can also access POP3 and NNTP messages. No longer actively developed, but source is available.
- MMail by Darwood Systems Ltd " a WYSIWYG, text composition, visualization and MIME mailer."
- Pronto "is a highly modularized GTK Mail Client written in Perl. (GPL License) Supports multiple pop accounts.
- Sylpheed by Hiroyuki Yamamoto "is an e-mail client (& news reader) based on GTK+... The appearance and interface are similar to some popular e-mail clients for Windows, such as Outlook Express, Becky!, and Datula. The interface is also designed to emulate the mailers on Emacsen, and almost all commands are accessible with the keyboard."
